Get it right or go home

There's more than one way to look at almost anything: Science has all the answers. Religion has better answers. My political and economic views are more accurate than yours. Supply-side? No, Keynesian. I think social engineering is necessary. No, we should all be libertarians. Philosophy will guide us, provided it's the correct blend of Aristotle and St. Thomas Aquinas. No way. Materialism or some version of naturalism is the right ticket to the show. Regardless, it's logic or bust. No, we also need intuition, imagination and feelings.  Ranting and raving about all these things is fine if you have the right logic (and intuitions) behind you, and no hidden assumptions. The right logic and intuitions, not the right special interest. But remember, just because I said it, doesn't mean I meant it.  Well, there you go ... it is what it is.

  1. I think some answers are better than others, I think we can move towards common wisdom and agreement. I think some answers don't have the logic or evidence to support them.

But then, all of this is still unfolding.

  2. Anon: I'm okay with your point #1, but then I too think some answers are better than others. Mine, usually. I also agree with your third point, that some answers don't have the logic or evidence to support them. My guess is Republicans and Democrats, theists and atheists, will also agree with you. So now we will need some logic and evidence to determine what logic and evidence is. That leaves your middle point: we can move towards common wisdom and agreement. Exactly. Now, without giving up on the logic and evidence argument - see our Precepts Page, how do we reach common wisdom?

  3. If I may be a bit facetious, while I agree a common wisdom can be reached, the term itself is suspiciously oxymoronic.

  4. adrift: Nicely put. I wonder if wisdom can be reached by consensus?
